For students

Information for interested rotators

Students in their fourth year of medical school who are interested in doing a rotation with the VCU Orthopaedic Department need to contact Nancy Jackson in the School of Medicine, Dean’s Office at (804) 828-9784 or by email at nbjackso@vcu.edu

Applying to VCU Medical Center Orthopaedic Residency Program

An applicant to the residency program must use the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS).

Nothing is required outside of the ERAS application and documents requested for upload. All materials must be received by Nov. 1 when the dean’s letter is released to programs.

The interview process

With completion of all of the required materials, you will be notified by mid- to late-November whether you have been granted an interview. Successful applicants are selected by the program director.

The residency program director screens applicants based on the following factors:

  • USMLE scores
  • Transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Dean’s letter

Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview. Once the interview dates are confirmed, each applicant will receive a packet with the following materials by email:

  • Confirmation letter
  • Tentative itinerary for the day
  • Directions to VCU Medical Center
  • Hotel information, etc.
  • Friday event details flyer

What to expect

There is an informal dinner scheduled the night before interviews. This is an opportunity for the applicants and residents to interview each other on an informal basis. Details regarding this event are sent out in the interview packet by email.

On the morning of the interview, breakfast is served and the chair and program director will give a department overview and introduction. Interviews begin at 8 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. Each applicant will have several interviews with orthopaedic faculty members and a tour of the hospital, clinics and research lab.

A survey requesting feedback from each applicant will be forwarded once all interviews are complete.
