Application and interview information

Interview

An applicant to the residency program must use the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS).

The following materials must be received no later than Nov. 24, with the exception of the dean’s letter which must be received by Nov. 1:

  • Application
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement including career goals and outside interests
  • Minimum of two letters of reference from physicians that you know well (we request that one be from a member of an orthopaedic department)

The interview process

With completion of all of the above materials, you will be notified in late November whether you have been granted an interview. Successful applicants are selected by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery faculty.

The residency program director screens applicants based on the following factors:

  • USMLE scores
  • Transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Dean’s letter

Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview. Once the interview dates are confirmed, each applicant will receive a packet with the following materials:

  • Confirmation letter
  • Directions to VCU Medical Center
  • Tentative itinerary for the day
  • Hotel information and directions
  • Recruitment CD
  • VCU School of Medicine postcard
  • Richmond Visitors Guide

What to expect

There is an informal dinner scheduled the night before interviews. This is an opportunity for the applicants and residents to interview each other on an informal basis. Details regarding this event are sent out in the interview packet by e-mail.

On the morning of the interview, we serve breakfast and have an introduction. Interviews begin at 8 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. Each applicant will have three interviews and a tour of the hospital, clinics and research lab.

A survey requesting feedback from each applicant will be forwarded once all interviews are complete.
